The Montessori Australia Council is a non-profit Company (limited by guarantee).The MAC began as a formal body called the Montessori Association of Australia (MAA) in 1986. Since then it has grown and changed many times as interests and energy have ebbed and flowed. The MAC supports and welcomes as members persons or organisations that have an interest in matters relating to Montessori education. In the past the MAA had its strength from state organisations that came together under the umbrella organisation of the MAA. At the AGM in 2008 held at the National Montessori Conference it was decided to review the MAA structure and make changes to better cater to the needs of members. This has now been completed and the MAA has formally affiliated with the International Montessori Council (IMC). This is an historic move for both organizations. Australia is the first country to have a national Montessori organisation affiliated with the IMC. For Australian Montessorians it now means that members are part of an international body that is independent and non-partisan. The MAA has changed its structure and name to reflect the many exciting advances it has made. The International Montessori Council is a world-wide body of Montessori schools, educators, parents, and friends of the Montessori vision of building peace through touching the lives of the world's children. The IMC is founded on the concept of a circle of equals. The International Montessori Council has been formed to build bridges of peace, understanding, and cooperation between all members of the Montessori community. The MAC shares this philosophy.
